Residential collection is made 1 time per week during the months of September through May and now 1 time per week during the months of June, July, and August.

275 commercial customers receive service using steel containers ranging in size from 2 to 8 cubic yards. Collection on these containers vary from 1 time per week to five times per week.Image of refuse transfer station

10 commercial customers utilize containers ranging in size from 20 to 40 cubic yards. Refuse collection is made using 9 employees of the Public Works Department.

Listed below are common waste materials generated by your home and business. The majority of your garbage is classified as Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and is taken to the York County Solid Waste Authority Waste to Energy Facility, more commonly called the incinerator. However, not all MSW can be incinerated. This list will tell you how to deal with these items.

Please call the following numbers for MSW Services:

  • To arrange for a special pick-up for a fee, call the Public Works Dept. between the hours of 7:30 AM and 3:30 PM at 632-3939.
  • To arrange for commercial or residential service call the Hanover Borough Office at 637-3877 between the hours of 8:00 Am and 5:00 PM.
  • For general information, call the Hanover Are Transfer Station at 633-5523.

Leaves In the Fall, place along curb for pick-up by Public Works or start a backyard composting program. For further information about backyard composting call the Transfer Station.

 Shingles Can be taken to Transfer Station in approved vehicle.
Paint & Paint Products These items are considered MSW. Dispose of in regular trash, make sure cans are tightly sealed and placed in plastic garbage bag. For large quantity pick-up call Public Works.
Sofa beds & Upholstered Furniture Call Public Works for pick-up or take to Transfer Station.
Tar paper Call Public Works for pick-up or bring to Transfer Station in approved vehicle.
Tires Residential customers may dispose of tires with their regular trash. Rims must be removed. One tire equals one bag of trash.
Wood (longer than 6 ', wider than 6 " ) Call Public Works for pick-up or take to Transfer Station.
White Goods (Appliances) Call Public Works for pick-up.
